About The Police Department

The Tiverton Police Department operates from a central police building located at 20 Industrial Way, Tiverton, RI

Currently, there are 28 sworn police officers on the staff.  They are supported by 8 full-time public safety dispatchers, a records clerk, maintenance/mechanic, a Chief's administrative assistant, and an animal control officer.

The Department operates with marked and unmarked vehicles.  The uniformed patrol fleet is equipped with the latest in communications and emergency response equipment. Each uniformed patrol vehicle utilizes mobile data technology that allows officers instant access to Federal, State, and Department databases. Uniformed patrol vehicles are also equipped with in-car video to capture arrest situations, and document officer/citizen contact, and reduce department liability.  Officers also have Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) at their disposal in every uniformed patrol vehicle to be used in the event an officer is called on to assist a citizen suffering from cardiac arrest.

The Tiverton Police Department is overseen by a Chief of Police, who is in command of all department divisions and functions. The Deputy Chief of Police is the executive officer and second in command of the Police Department. The Deputy Chief is in command of all department operations including the detective division, and is the department's press/public relations officer.

The Detective Division is responsible for the investigation of all major felonies, to include but not limited to homicide, robbery, felony assault, sexual assault, child molestation, burglary, and all violations of the uniformed controlled substance act.  The detective division is also responsible for the preparation and presentation of all felony, misdemeanor, and traffic cases that are generated by police department.  The Detective Division works closely with the State Attorney General's office and the Town Solicitor to ensure the successful prosecution of all violations of Local and State Law.  The Detective Division also maintains close relationships with Federal, State, and Local Law Enforcement agencies to share intelligence and provide assistance with on-going criminal investigations.

The Patrol or Uniform Division is commanded by a Uniformed Lieutenant who oversees all uniform patrol functions, including the dispatch center. The uniform division provides 24-hour police protection divided into three (3) eight hour shifts or watches.  Each watch is commanded by a Sergeant and supervised by a Corporal, who assumes the Sergeant's responsibilities on the Sergeant's days off.  The Uniform Division is responsible for the initial investigation of all citizen complaints, the enforcement of all State and Local laws, the enforcement of all traffic related laws, and the investigation of all motor vehicle accidents.  The Uniform Division also maintains community safety, security, and quality of life through professionalism and commitment to its citizens.

The Tiverton Police Department has a police officer permanently assigned to the Tiverton Public School System.  This officer is commonly referred to as a School Resource Officer (SRO).  The SRO is based in the Tiverton High School but routinely visits the Town's Middle and Elementary schools.  The SRO is responsible for investigating all complaints that occur on school property, provide and review security for all school buildings, and act as a liaison between the Police Department, the School Administration and the Students.

Several officers have been specially trained as bicycle patrol officers.  The bicycle patrol is used on special assignments and to supplement regular vehicle patrol.  Seasonally, bicycle patrol officers are deployed in assigned area to increase police presence and foster good community relations.

The Tiverton Police Department has several officers certified as Child Safety Seat Technicians.  These officers have been trained to inspect and properly install child safety restraint systems.  Officers are always available at headquarters to inspect, install, and educate citizens in the proper manner in which child safety seats should be utilized.
