Featured Artist: HELEN STURGES NADLER

“This is what I do. Every morning, I go down to the sea to have its image hold me. Sometimes, this obsession demands a painting. I make the painting with watercolor pigments that creat light and translucency, with paper that is the ground of that light. When I am in desert and mountain landscape, the experience is the same. The cloud shadows scud across the land, across the vast horizontal space, creating that same light of color and translucency.
That great horizontal is the unchanging, defining distance, the large perspective. The counterpoint of vertical and diagonal softens that starkness, moving us closer. That counterjpoint sometimes extends me to the delight of the close-up: bits inhabiting the beach, reflections of the sky in the running surf. Lines, edges, planes, dance, but always in obeisance to the horizontal, archetype of infinity.”
Ms. Nadler was raised in New England and was graduated from Mount Holyoke College. She received an M.A.T from Wesleyan University and an M.A. in art therapy from the University of New Mexico. She has taught the medium of watercolor at U.N.M. and at RISDE Continuing Education, as well as local art groups, and currently holds a critique class at her home in Tiverton. Her paintings have been exhibited in New Mexico and New England. Her latest exhibition was in 2008 at Gallery 4 in Tiverton. She is a member of the Providence Art Club and Art League of Rhode Island.
