Educational Outreach
Members of the Tiverton Arts Council believe that arts are integral to life. Their efforts are devoted to increasing access to the visual and performing arts for all members of the community. By bringing together artists and audiences, the Arts Council hopes to foster an enriched, cohesive and thriving community.
Over the past 2 years, the Tiverton Arts Council has been instrumental in developing an after school arts program in Tiverton. Initially, ArtsExpress began at the Pocasset School. The Arts Council identified arts educators to teach classes and funding, shared by the school’s PTO and Friends of Arts in Tiverton, enabled the program to be offered at no cost to students. First through fourth graders were engaged in visual arts (Painting Stories; Recycled Sculpture; Scientific Illustration via Amphibians, Reptiles and Fish- Oh My!) and in performing arts (drumming, musical theater, hip-hop dance, and ballet). In addition to creating art and sharing in performances, these children learned skills, developed confidence, and gained a wider perspective of their world.
As a result of the successful program at Pocasset School, parents of the Ranger School began a pilot program in the spring of 2006, with local artist Gary Farias teaching drawing and painting. Members of the Fort Barton school community are developing an after school arts and activity program that began in the fall of 2006.
In collaboration with Friends of Arts in Tiverton and with the support of a grant from the Rhode Island legislature, the Tiverton Arts Council sponsored a series of artists’ workshops in 2006. These workshops included a discussion of the artistic process by photographer Ira Kerns and a figure drawing workshop led by painter Meredith Cornell. In June, watercolor artist and President of the Arts League of Rhode Island, Nancy Gaucher-Thomas led a workshop focused on a specific watercolor technique.
Suggestions for future workshops are always welcome. Please contact Carolyn Winter at 401-624-1699 regarding topics that interest you.
